Please Support a Dedicated Pancreatic Cancer Research Program at DoD

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and someone who has been impacted by pancreatic cancer, I urge you to support a dedicated pancreatic cancer research program at the Department of Defense (DoD) for $10 million in the FY20 Defense appropriations bill. The support of your office is critical in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States and the only major cancer with a survival rate in the single digits at just 9 percent. There is currently no early detection strategy and limited treatment options. Additionally, research shows that within a cohort of U.S. veterans, there is direct evidence for increased risk of death from pancreatic cancer. Veterans often have known risk factors for pancreatic cancer, including environmental exposure, other medical conditions such as diabetes, and lifestyle factors such as smoking and obesity.

Earlier this year, 18 bipartisan members of the U.S. Senate signed a Dear Colleague to Senate appropriators, encouraging them to take this critical step by creating a dedicated pancreatic cancer research program at the DoD.

The current research investment is underfunded compared to the severity of the disease. A more focused effort is needed to accelerate progress. A dedicated program at the DoD would provide much-needed funding for research to advance pancreatic cancer discoveries and improve outcomes for patients.

As you and your colleagues work through the FY20 appropriations process, I ask that you support my request to make pancreatic cancer research a priority and support a dedicated program at the Department of Defense for $10 million.

Sincerely,
