In honor of Steven A. McConnaughey, who courageously battled Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. Steve demonstrated extraordinary strength, determination, grit, and grace throughout his journey. Steve’s year-long fight ended on September 29, 2024 as he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He was the most amazing husband, father, Paw-Paw, brother, and uncle. We are supporting PanCAN's vision to create a world in which all patients with pancreatic cancer will have the medical support needed to not just battle, but to survive and thrive.
Steve proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Independence (CV-62) from 1973 to 1977, which spanned the Vietnam War. He received Congressional Recognition including a Medal of Honor for service during wartime. After being honorably discharged from the military, Steve began his 21-year career with Potomac Edison. During his years of service with the company, he served in a multitude of roles including lineman, scheduler, and accountant. During this time, Steve achieved a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Shenandoah University. After receiving his Master’s degree from Mount St. Mary's University, he completed the remainder of his career as Chief Financial Officer for National Auto Auction Association, retiring in 2022 after 20 years of service. Steve was a man of deep faith, displayed by his genuine kindness and acts of service for others. He was an active member of several churches during his lifetime. He had a deep love for family and enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, and engaging in activities that brought others joy. Steve truly loved life and sharing it with others.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV): "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
We are organizing a special fundraiser in honor of Steve to raise awareness and donations for pancreatic cancer research. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive and least understood cancers, with limited treatment options and a low survival rate. We are partnering with Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), a national organization dedicated to improving patient outcomes through research, patient services, and advocacy. Our goal is to bring attention to this devastating illness and contribute to finding a cure by supporting PanCAN’s efforts to advance research and provide hope for patients and families.
Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference. By donating or simply sharing our cause, you are helping to fund innovative research, provide crucial support to patients, and drive advocacy efforts. PanCAN plays a vital role in making strides toward early detection and better treatments. Let’s come together as a community to honor Steve's fight and make a lasting impact in the battle against pancreatic cancer.
Thank you for your support!
