This fall, I'm running in honor of my hero, James Sampliner (or, as us grandkids always called him, Dadoo). After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2018, he fought hard against the disease for four years, never losing his capacity to find beauty and grace in the everyday. But my lasting memories of him won't be him when he was sick; he was too full of life and passion—for sports, politics, economics, music, friends, family, fitness, chocolate, gardening, and so much more—to be reduced to that. Instead, I'll remember him as the 5'7" giant he was, and I'll be honored to run in his memory.
