Since I was a young kid, everyone in my family told me that I was a younger version of my great uncle, Bernie Walton. From the outgoing personality to the red hair and freckles, I was the spitting image of him. Such a comparison was an honor since he was someone that I looked up to from a very young age. He was a loving person and would always do anything you needed while cracking jokes about something. In the spring of 2017, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Once finding out, he was a true fighter and still the loving/caring person that he always was. On June 25, 2017 he passed away after a hard fight. Since his passing, not a day goes by that he has not been in my thoughts. As a veteran himself, I know he would be proud of me for pursuing my career as an officer in the United States Coast Guard.
I am running the 2024 Los Angeles Marathon for the PANCAN Team in memory of my Uncle Bernie and the lasting impact that he left on me.
With your support, I’m taking bold action to improve the lives of everyone impacted by pancreatic cancer.
