In the past three years we have lost two very special people to us due to Pancreatic Cancer--Sheila Rashal and Paul Seltzer. These are two incredible people who touched countless lives in many ways. Both have had profound impacts on me personally and are key contributors to the person I am today.
This race has special meaning to me and it is thanks to Paul. 10 years ago, when I had serious back problems, Paul encouraged me to take on a challenge and try a triathlon with him. TOBAY, being his favorite race, became my mantra through physical therapy, training and ultimately race day. I had never thought I could try, let alone complete a triathlon, yet with Paul's encouragement and companionship, I did!
I was crushed when Paul was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and quickly went from triathlon shape to his passing. Two years later my amazing mother-in-law Sheila went through the same challenge--from healthy and vibrant Noni to gone in a flash. Sheila treated me as family long before Emily and I exchanged our vows. I miss our late night talks on family sleepovers about spirituality both East and West and the love and compassion she shared with our beautiful little girls. I was truly blessed in my life by the presence of both Paul and Sheila and their impact lives on with our family, with their children and grandchildren and the many friends and acquaintances they have touched along the way.
Pancreatic cancer is so terrible for how impossible it is to diagnose. By the time most patients learn that something is wrong, it is too late. Science has come a long way, but research needs considerably more support to help others avoid the same fate.
