Why am I running the 2024 NYC Marathon?
The short answer is I am running for my best friend, hero, and rock. My dad.
To provide a little more detail on my why please see below:
On January 21, 2022 my father was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer: Metastatic Adenocarcinoma. The cancer had spread throughout his body and to other organs. He was given 3 to 6 months to live.
Rob Schasteen is many amazing things. Above all, he is a fabulous father, father in law, and grandad. Recently, he retired from a successful career in sales. The man loves a good cup of coffee and you can find him most days trying to improve his golf game.
If you know my dad at all though, you likely know that he is very stubborn, has negative reactions to being told what to do, and truly he is a bold fighter! Usually these three things may not always be a recipe for success but in the face of a terminal cancer diagnosis it has proven to be life saving.
After my dad received his diagnosis, my husband, dog and I moved from Tennessee to Pennsylvania to care for him. What we were originally told would be a few months has turned into over two years and we could not be more proud and grateful for every day we spend with him.
Two and half years later and he just finished his FIFTY SEVENTH chemo treatment which is BEYOND incredible and he is fighting this horrendous cancer every single day. As his caregiver we have been through more highs and lows together than most people will endure in a lifetime. I am so thankful that I have the honor of being by his side and battling this fight.
So why should you join me as I train, run and fundraise for the 2024 NYC Marathon (only 9 months after having a baby, yes I do love a challenge!)?
Pancan has been a vital resource in our journey.
After my dad received his diagnosis, I quickly immersed myself into the pancreatic cancer world. Something I never wanted to know every detail of, consumed my every thought and haunted me every minute of every day. Overwhelmed and hopeless with the numerous doctors appointments, second opinions, decisions (oh the decisions that felt like mountains weighing on us) I felt as though I had nowhere to turn but then I found Pancan. Pancan has been a tremendous resource for us and now I am dedicated to helping others through this organization and its resources.
