My sister Mary was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 2024, and lived only 12 more weeks. Had there been earlier detection, her opportunities for survival may have increased. But 95% of those with pancreatic cancer are diagnosed at Stages III or IV - too late for most, as it was for her.
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN) is conducting important clinical studies investigating the relationship between blood sugar and pancreatic cancer. A diagnosis of diabetes over age 50 (as Mary had) can be either a symptom or a risk factor associated with pancreatic cancer. With further research, there is a greater possibility of earlier detection, and greater help and hope for patients and their families.
