In June of 2019, my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. At that point, the tumor was localized in the pancreas but considered progressed as it was inoperable. My mother did very well with treatments and maintained a good quality of life for more than a year. In December of 2020, our worst fears came true when we learned the cancer had metastasized. At a doctor's appointment with her in early January 2021, we learned the cancer was 'Stage IV' and 'incurable'. Less than a month later, she passed away in at-home hospice care.
My mother, the light of our lives, was battling one of the deadliest cancers. At 10%, pancreatic cancer has the lowest five-year surival rate and is the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US.
PANCAN works to advance pancreatic cancer research, build community, share knowledge, and advocate for patients and families. In honor of my mother, I am walking 160 miles from 3/22 to 5/1. I had originally hoped to earn $10\mile, but due to overwhelming support and donations, I have already earned over $6,000! My new goal is $7500. If you have the means, please donate and know you're making a big difference for patients and families.
