Played Commander William T. Riker on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”

My brother Daniel was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer over 20 years ago. His doctor gave him six to eight months to live, saying there was nothing that could be done for him. He died a week before my daughter was born.

The survival rate for pancreatic cancer was only 3% then, so to see that it’s now 13% is great. But, there’s still a long way to go.

This is where you come in. I hope you’ll join me and support the work of PanCAN.

PanCAN is bold and innovative, like “Star Trek.”

They started their own clinical trial because the traditional clinical trial system is too slow and, as I know from my brother’s experience, pancreatic cancer patients don’t have time to wait. They recently announced an Early Detection Initiative that will hopefully lead the way to detecting pancreatic cancer when it is more treatable.

Daniel’s death was hard on our family. My dad never really recovered from it. But when I look at my dear friend and fellow “Star Trek” actor Kitty Swink I see hope – she’s a 20 plus pancreatic cancer survivor!

Kitty’s survival really helped our family. She represents the possibility of life after pancreatic cancer – of HOPE.

That’s why I’m joining PurpleStride LA to help raise money for PanCAN.

I want people to know how fast and brutal and relentless pancreatic cancer can be, but I also want to change the perception - pancreatic cancer is NOT hopeless.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, at nearly 60 events across the country, pancreatic cancer survivors, families, caregivers, researchers and supporters will join together and walk to honor everyone affected by the disease.

PurpleStride is PanCAN’s biggest community event of the year, raising money to fight pancreatic cancer on all fronts — through research, clinical initiatives, patient services, advocacy and nationwide volunteer support. Learn more.
