Why I Support PurpleStride: Honoring My Mom’s Memory

In December 2023, my family experienced an unimaginable loss—we lost my mom to pancreatic cancer just two weeks after her diagnosis. It happened so fast. Looking back, there were small signs that were subtle, seemingly unrelated symptoms but nothing that felt urgent.

It started with some pain in her side, something none of us thought could be life-threatening. But after a series of tests, doctors delivered the devastating news: my mom had pancreatic
cancer. It was aggressive, it had spread to her lungs and liver, and there were no treatment options. They told us we might have weeks, maybe months. We had two choices: admit her to the hospital or bring her home with hospice care.

We chose to bring her home, believing we’d have at least a little time together. But by the next morning, she couldn’t stand. The decline was so rapid that none of us could have been prepared. We called our loved ones, urging them to come say goodbye. Just days later, she was gone.

Pancreatic cancer is terrifying because it’s often found too late—when there’s nothing left to do. That’s why I got involved with PANCAN and why I’m raising funds in my mom’s honor. Research, awareness, and funding for early detection are critical. If we can catch this cancer sooner, we can change the odds. We can give families more time. And maybe, one day, we can stop losing our loved ones so suddenly, so unfairly.

Every contribution, no matter the size, helps bring us one step closer to a world where pancreatic cancer is no longer a death sentence.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, at nearly 60 events across the country, pancreatic cancer survivors, families, caregivers, researchers and supporters will join together and walk to honor everyone affected by the disease.

PurpleStride is PanCAN’s biggest community event of the year, raising money to fight pancreatic cancer on all fronts — through research, clinical initiatives, patient services, advocacy and nationwide volunteer support. Learn more.
