Dear Friends,

On this day 12 years ago, December 30, 2013, I was in the operating room at UCSD Thornton Hospital.  Dr. Andrew Lowy performed a Whipple surgery for pancreatic cancer.  I am still here, a rare survivor of the world's toughest cancer.  

While my doctors remain careful and I remain under surveillance, there is no sign of disease.  I continue to work advocating for those who cannot do so for themselves, and I remain active with swimming, cycling, and activities like wake surfing and snowboarding. I appreciate your support.  But we still need your help.

The five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer remains at 13%.  (For adenocarcinomas - the most common type of pancreatic cancer like I had, the 5-year survival rate is just 8%.)  When I was diagnosed in 2013, the five-year survival rate was a dismal 6 percent.  We need to save more lives - a one percent increase means about 640 more loved ones who will enjoy life's moments five years after diagnosis. 

There remains more work to be done because an estimated 67,440 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2025 – more than ever before.  Approximately 51,980 Americans are expected to die from the disease.  And pancreatic cancer remains the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.
