When Mom was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 1992 we were blessed that her cancer was operable and her Whipple surgery was a success. We were informed of the 4% chance that this could give us 5 more years with Mom but we actually had 27 years and nearly 9 months!

When we formed our team I asked Mom what one word she associates with her cancer survival, she immediately said gratitude and our team name Sylvia's Gratitude was quickly decided (now amended to Sylvia's Gratitude 27 yrs). We feel gratitude for research prior to 1992 which made her diagnosis and Whipple surgery by Dr Stoltenberg possible. We feel gratitude for blood test results (when Mom went to donate blood) that revealed an abnormality resulting in testing and two months later her quick diagnosis when she became jaundiced and surgery only 3 days later. Mom had so much gratitude for many blessings during her survival including grandchildren's births and graduations, marriages and anniversaries, the birth of her great great niece who is named Sylvia after her, and many other memories with family and friends. Before she passed away she even learned she would be a great grandmother!

The 5-year survival statistics have increased from 4% in 1992 to 13% in 2024. Please join us and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in this fight against pancreatic cancer. On Saturday, April 25, 2026, at nearly 60 events across the country, pancreatic cancer survivors, families, caregivers, researchers and supporters will join together and walk to honor everyone affected by the disease.
