Standing Strong Against Pancreatic Cancer

It will be 4 years in April since we lost Kathleen to pancreatic cancer. I still wonder every day WHAT IF it had been caught earlier?

Early detection is critical with this disease, in particular. 

Pancreatic cancer remains the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, behind lung and colorectal cancers. According to the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Statistics, 2026, report released on January 13, overall cancer mortality continues to decline and five-year survival for all cancers combined reached 70%, yet progress for pancreatic cancer has stalled. The five-year relative survival rate remains just 13%, and death rates, after decades of increase, show little improvement. Pancreatic cancer remains the deadliest major cancer and the only one with a five-year survival rate below 20%. 

That is why I am so passionate about early detection. Caught early, and with the increase in new clinical trials and better treatments, more people will be able to thrive with this as a chronic disease rather than a terminal disease. I believe we CAN improve outcomes.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, at nearly 60 events across the country, pancreatic cancer survivors, families, caregivers, researchers and supporters will join together and walk to honor everyone affected by the disease.

PurpleStride is PanCAN’s biggest community event of the year, raising money to fight pancreatic cancer on all fronts — through research, clinical initiatives, patient services, advocacy and nationwide volunteer support. Learn more.
