Four years ago, in early December 2022, my husband Jeff was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  On January 26th, only 7 weeks later, he was gone.  There was barely time to process the diagnosis.  The signs and symptoms had been so subtle and so unspecific that by the time we found the right support and received the diagnosis the disease had spread throughout his body.  Jeff fought.  Bravely.  But it was never a fair fight.

Jeff was 68 years old and otherwise in good health.  He was the best - that rare individual with a zest for life, and an interest in the people and the world around him.  An avid reader, golfer, cyclist, a Beatles and Philadelphia sports fan.  Full of life and admired by those who knew him.  A loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, son, cousin, friend, co-worker, coach.  One of the good guys.  No, it wasn’t fair.

Well, pancreatic cancer doesn’t fight fair!

Yet PanCAN, through its comprehensive approach to fighting the disease, has made strides (PurpleStrides!).  Its initiatives such as those focused on early detection, and its precision medicine programs aimed at improving patient outcomes through personalized treatment rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, have helped to boost the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer from the 4% rate recorded in 1999 (when PanCAN was founded) to 13% in 2026.  A significant improvement!  BUT NOT GOOD ENOUGH!  Let’s help PanCAN improve it even further!

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, at nearly 60 events across the country, pancreatic cancer survivors, families, caregivers, researchers and supporters will join together and walk to honor everyone affected by the disease.

PurpleStride is PanCAN’s biggest community event of the year, raising money to fight pancreatic cancer on all fronts — through research, clinical initiatives, patient services, advocacy and nationwide volunteer support. Learn more.
