Most of you are probably aware that I lost my Mom to pancreatic cancer in 2007. She was not in any of the risk groups, so her diagnosis really caught us off guard; but that's the nature of this beast. When she first told me, I knew nothing of the disease, and, in a moment of ignorant optimism, I thought her pancreas could be removed and she would be fine. Then I googled it. I remember starting to shake, the tears falling, and the feeling that I was going to throw up. This was going to be a heck of a battle. Mom faced it head on, with grace and strength like I've never seen. She made a bucket list "Things to live for in 2006, Things to live for in 2007" and started checking them off. There was very little left on that list when she left this world for her reward.

Her experience opened our eyes to the world of pancreatic cancer and the sad statistics involved. Even today, pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of the major cancers. The only way we can change that is thru early detection and better treatments and the only way that can happen is with the dollars for research, education, advocacy, etc. The PurpleStrideRide is one way my family has been involved in fundraising, and I'm proud to be peddling with them again. Local action. Nationwide impact. This is PanCAN PurpleStride, the ultimate walk to end pancreatic cancer.

On Saturday, April 27, 2024, at nearly 60 events across the country, pancreatic cancer survivors, families, caregivers, researchers and supporters will join together and walk to honor everyone affected by the disease.

PurpleStride is PanCAN's signature community celebration, raising money to fight pancreatic cancer on all fronts — through research, clinical initiatives, patient services, advocacy and nationwide volunteer support. Learn more.
