Team Papa - honoring Michael Koplow

It's been 10 years since we lost our father Michael Koplow to pancreatic cancer....

Known to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Papa, he was our beloved patriarch, friend and supporter to so many.   His loss fueled us with determination to support PanCAN's work to move pancreatic cancer from being one of the deadliest cancers to a survivable cancer.  The five year survival rate for pancreas cancer is only 11%.  It was 5% at the time of his death.  Progress has been steady, but too slow and over 500,000 people in the US have lost their lives to pancreatic cancer in the last decade.

We walk this year as Team Papa to pay tribute to our beloved father and to support the relentless and determined work of PanCAN in funding scientific and medical research to find identify early detection techniques, better therapeutics and to support patients and their families navigate the treatment options.  An engineer by training, Papa had a mantra "there's always a better way" that he applied to all things in life.  He applied that same principle to his own treatment plan trying to aid his doctors to pursue all viable options.

Our sister Hilarie joined PanCAN's Board of Directors 9 years ago to lend a hand in helping them fundraise to find that "better way".  During this time, PanCAN has built a community of the top medical practitioners and scientists and invested millions of dollars in innovative research building alliances with pancreatic cancer organizations globally and partnering with governmental organizations and pharmaceutical companies.  PanCAN is consistently named a Charity Navigator, 4-star organization putting it in the "exceptional" category of non-profits.

Given the risks and complexity of the pandemic, it's been two years since PanCAN ran their Annual PurpleStride 5K walk which is their largest fundraising event.  And for the first time ever, PurpleStride is happening all over the United States on April 30th 2022 which also happens to be Papa's birthday.  It seems a fitting tribute to him that Team Papa will stride in Boston, MA and San Jose, CA.   In honor of his birthday, we will be matching all donations up to $25,000 to support the work of this organization.

If you can, please make a gift of any size to help us support PanCAN's work and please join us Team Papa at Purplestride Boston on April 30th at 10am.
