Remember Joy Maggio, Support Team "Joy Maggio's Smile"

This is Michael, Joy Maggio's husband,

Many of you know that Joy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer shortly after her birthday in 2019. She had only one symptom, a slight pain in her mid-back. She was extremely healthy, except for pancreatic cancer!

One week after her diagnosis, we traveled to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore to see the top pancreatic cancer team in the country. Joy's treatment plan was considered the "gold standard". Chemo,
radiation, surgery if possible, more chemo and then a clinical trial.
She responded well to the initial chemo and radiation. Surgery was in
February 2020. She was declared cancer free but would still need to
complete the planned chemo to be certain. The chemo never happened because Covid-19 shut down the infusion centers for months. Joy had a recurrence in February 2021. More surgery and much more chemo was scheduled.

I won’t go into the details, but it was a very difficult two years for Joy. Despite her determination, the chemo wasn’t working. Three different regimens failed to get the cancer under control. On most days it was impossible to tell if the cancer or the chemo side effects were worse. Throughout the treatments, we were ever hopefuland Joy forged ahead with more treatments and procedures whenever she was well enough. Her oncologist told us that Joy had taken more chemo
than any of his other patients.

I lost the love of my life on September 14, 2022. Joy fought until the
final moments. I held her, prayed for her and comforted her till the end.

There are three things that everyone who ever met Joy will remember:

  • Her smile.

  • She always put others first.

  • She loved everyone.

In the end, Joy wanted three things:

  • She wanted to be with me forever.

  • She wanted to be rejoined with her parents and with God.

  • She wanted NO ONE ELSE to ever get pancreatic cancer.

That’s why I have started a team to participate in PanCAN PurpleStride on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Crane’s Roost Park, Altamonte Springs, Florida. PanCan PurpleStride is the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s annual fundraiser. PanCAN raises money to fund vital research that can bring new treatment options to patients, and gives them free, personalized one-to-one support through PanCAN Patient Services.

If you’re able to come to Central Florida on April 29, 2023, please
join my team, Joy Maggio’s Smile. If you aren’t able to join the team, please be a sponsor.

I’d love to see you there!

Just click the Register button at the top of this page and follow a few easy steps to get set up. Anyone who registers and raises $50 will receive an official PanCAN PurpleStride 2023 T-shirt!

Thank you for your support!
