Honoring David: Fighting for a Future Without Pancreatic Cancer

It was David's birthday on November 14, 2015. I had been trying to reach him all day to sing him Happy Birthday,but he wasn't answering. Finally, around 3 PM, he picked up. He was at Methodist Hospital in Houston.   WTH?

"They found a tumor on my pancreas," he said.

Mercifully unaware of what that truly meant, I thought, Oh hell, he'll beat this. But just days later, we got the devastating diagnosis: Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It was a gut punch to our entire family. My sweet, charismatic, accomplished older brother- the one who rarely drank, worked out every day, and lived his life with so much generosy had been given the worst possible news. 
David fought like hell for two years. But in May 2018, we lost him at the age of sixty-one.
There's so much I could say about who he was and what he meant to us, but here's what I need you to know: The prognosis for this ruthless disease remains grim. It's called the silent killer for a reason. By the time it's detected,it's often too late. And yet, if we knew then what we know now, maybe we could have caught it sooner.

Today, the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer has crept up to 13%. That means out of every 100 people diagnosed this year, only 13 will still be here in five years. That's not enough. More must be done, more awareness, more research, more early detection.

You may be thinking, Why should I care? I don’t know anyone with pancreatic cancer.

Neither did we.

Until we did.

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, at nearly 60 events across the country, pancreatic cancer survivors, families, caregivers, researchers and supporters will join together and walk to honor everyone affected by the disease.
