A personal note: (this is long, so pull up a chair. I love you and appreciate you taking time to read this and know how very raw and personal this is).

In loving Memory of

Mark David Mogul

My talented, loving, strong, beautiful 64 year old husband was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in March 2023. He died in June 2023. There were no signs except that he felt “full” in his stomach. “Just to be super cautious”, our friend and Vanderbilt PCP sent Mark for an XRay that quickly identified a need for him to go to the Oncologist for more testing. In only one week of his life, my life, the proverbial rug was pulled out from under us.

Everything changed. Everything.

I can’t sugar coat this. Pancreatic cancer is horrific. As dedicated and incredible as my husband‘s teams at Duke and Vanderbilt were, and though they used every resource at their disposal to save his life, they couldn’t. All they could do was try their best to make the moments he had left, less painful, and even with that, they fell short. When Mark was diagnosed in early March 2023, we looked deep into one another’s eyes that dreaded moment in the Oncologist’s office and no words were needed - the fight was on. We teamed up, like always and we were preparing to win. Mark was a winner. He told me I was too. We had this. He fought, we fought, and the doctors fought the fight of his life. We prayed, and our church and family and friends prayed. He took every dose of medication, did everything he was told might help. I didn’t leave his side. We fought for his life. We began praying for just a few days of normalcy or of him feeling well enough to go around the golf course with his buddies, for us to be able to walk to our garden together. It wasn’t long before we found ourselves grateful for simple things like IV hydration that actually helped, a protein shake he could keep down, a moment of physical strength where he could walk to the bathroom on his own. The journey was intense and the reality was mind blowing. Devastatingly, it wasn’t long before we saw that he had little to no chance. There were not enough answers, not enough of anything. Bottom line is there must be more research, more resources, more prayer, more education. People need to know that pancreatic cancer can be so devastating, and that it is in fact, crumbling lives, the loss is so incredibly traumatic. PANCAN offers true hope in this confusing and devastating disease. There can be hope. There can be answers and God willing, a cure! I am here now, after losing my best friend and precious husband to this awful disease, after watching this strong, beautiful man suffer, to tell you that if wearing purple or walking, running, fundraising whatever is necessary is what we need to do to save lives then I am asking you to please, please join me in this. Wear purple, (even if you’re like me, and it’s not your color), come walk, raise some money, donate, do what you can. Please. Mark will never be defined by cancer-he was so gifted and had so many God given talents, but this disease truly took him away unexpectedly and so unnecessarily. He would never want others to go through this. We can stop this from happening to others. Since Mark passed away I have met so many people who have come to me and said “I lost my grandfather, dad, brother, mom, sister, etc to pancreatic cancer. The stories are all so similar, it was so quick and so painful and there was just nothing else that could be done. Please help me to encourage a pivot, a change,  and to improve the research process at all levels with regard to Pancreatic Cancer.  Let’s do this in loving memory of Mark as well as so many others who are fighting and those who have lost this fight. We truly can help change the course of this disease. “On Your Mark”…Let’s Go!

With love,

Tammy
