Welcome to our team fundraising page!

It is hard to believe it’s been five years since I lost my mom to Pancreatic Cancer.  My mom, Kathryn was given the nickname, Bebe, when she was a child.  It stuck with her throughout her life, from family to friends to co-workers.  It was even printed on her work ID badge.

Bebe became a registered nurse in 1961.  She worked at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Clarksburg, WV for a number of years before starting a family and later worked at the local city hospital until her retirement.  At St Mary’s Hospital she collected many odd and funny stories with her fellow R/N and best friend, Becky D.  One of her stories which was written in a book is as follows.

“I was working in the ER one evening and our rooms (only 2) were very busy and the hall was full of waiting people.

The Emergency car had brought in a D.O.A. to be taken to the morgue. We were too busy and it got too late to go to the morgue.

Well, Mr. Vanhoy’s office was next to the E.R.  He was the office manager handling finances.  He also left early that day.  So, I decided to put the body in his office.

He came in early next morning-before I could remove the body.  I heard, ‘Granett, what is this in my office?’”

Bebe loved learning and reading about medications and had her RX Drug book handy at all times.  In a different time, Bebe would have made an excellent Doctor in Internal Medicine.

Bebe was diagnosed with Advanced Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer in April of 2015, while enjoying her retirement years and after recently becoming a “nunny”.   After enduring multiple procedures, chemotherapy, fatigue and discomfort, she was taken from us on February 21, 2016. It’s a terrible disease. She fought the fight.

Bebe was able to witness her youngest daughter become a Doctor.  She was very proud.  She also was able to watch her grandson make it to this first birthday before she became a guardian angel.  He “meets” and “remembers” his ‘nunny’ through stories and pictures.

In memory of Bebe, out team has stepped up to Wage Hope at PurpleStride, the walk to end Pancreatic Cancer.  Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all major cancers, at just 010%.  By donating to our team, you are supporting vital efforts to double pancreatic survival rate.
