Carraway Cancer Killers

Carraway Cancer Killers

Raised: $3,751

Goal: $7,500

Welcome to our team fundraising page!

I started participating in this walk several years ago when a friend of mine formed a team for a mutual friend of ours. Even as a nurse, I really did not know much about pancreatic cancer other than it did not have a very good prognosis. Unfortunately, now I know more. Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all major cancers. The survival rate just increased from 9% to 10%. In real numbers, about 60,430 people in the US will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2021 and 48,220 will die of pancreatic cancer in 2021. Although pancreatic cancer accounts for only 3% of all cancers, it is deadly and must be cured! The worst part about pancreatic cancer is it took away one of my best friends and one of the most selfless women I have ever known - Beverly Carraway-Handley.

I met Beverly while working at Carraway Methodist Medical Center. She was an AMAZING mom, wife, physician, friend, role model, etc. I could seriously go on forever. She was so much to so many! Beverly lost her fight to pancreatic cancer on July 21, 2020. She was diagnosed in February of 2018 with pancreatic cancer. She underwent radiation and chemo prior to having a distal pancriatectomy at MD Anderson. Beverly also had post op chemo as well. Beverly underwent an additional surgery in March of 2019 for an additional lesion found in her abdominal wall (omentum) at MD Anderson. Her fight with pancreatic cancer was done with dignity, positivity, and a beautiful strength that was inspiring. She was also a breast cancer survivor.

Not only is our team walking in memory of Beverly, we are walking in memory of our other shinning blue stars that have courageously fought this horrific disease:

Dr. Harold Cooley was an Emergency/ LifeSaver physician at Carraway. He lost his battle in November of 2017. Coolio was our Superman!

Bill Shoemaker was a RN at Carraway. His battle was lost in June 2016. His wife Toni also worked at Carraway in ECHO.

Larry Nelms lost his battle in June of 2016. Larry was the beloved husband of Julia Nelms, Flight Nurse at Carraway for many years.

This deadly disease has stolen our best and our brightest stars, but it can't take away our determination.

Will you please help me rewrite the future of this disease by making a donation and/ or walk with us today? I have set our team goal at $7,500.

Every dollar that you give ensures that the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network can continue working to improve outcomes for pancreatic cancer patients and their families. By donating today, you are supporting vital efforts to double pancreatic cancer survival!

Purple ribbons aren't enough. Please join me in the fight today. Thank you so much for your support and for remembering my friends and their families!
