Welcome to our team fundraising page!

Hi !

I'm Susan participating in PanCAN’s Purple Stride, as Team Aretha. A tribute to Aretha Franklin, the queen of soul. Who knew Ms. Franklin had pan can? I didn't nor did I ever think I would be in this pickle fighting this disease.

What started out as presumed gallstones in my common bile duct turned into Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.  Large pancreas head mass with liver metastasis. As a nurse practitioner I thought I knew what that meant.  I had a lot to learn.

I went to see an oncologist, Dr. Kristhnamurthi at The Cleveland Clinic that came highly recommended, and they were right. She is the bomb.  I sat in her office by myself holding back tears and fear as she gave me the facts about my disease and my options. I asked her "What if I do nothing?" She turned to look at me straight in the eye, "5 to 6 months." That spooked me. The chemotherapy protocol as she explained was "tough, we don't offer it to everyone, you don't have any choice Susan your tumor is large."  I told her I needed to think about it as I got up to walk out. She reached out to me, "You don't have much time to think about it Susan. You need to get started ASAP."

I was never a quitter and I wasn't going to start now. Then the whirlwind started. GI and oncology appointments, biopsies, port placement and the dreaded palliative care appointment. "Have you thought about dying Susan?" he asked. "Well I guess I am now", I answered. I have grown to love my palliative care doctor.

Here I am 14 months later and my pancreas tumor went from a "large" (no dimensions needed) to barely seen on CT scan.  1/4 liver metastasis is gone and the rest have shrunk.

I have met so many great people on my journey that I can't thank enough. The support from family, friends and coworkers has been overwhelming. The team at the Moll Cancer center with The Cleveland Clinic has been so good to me. I'll miss them when I'm gone.

I met a great surgeon at UH, Jordan Winter who has given me encouragement and other options for my disease.

Pancreatic cancer affects few in cancer numbers but kills many. There have been small strides in genetic therapy, pancreatic cancer screening and new chemotherapy protocols. We need your help in battling this disease. As Aretha Franklin would say, "Think" and "Ain't no way" we can fight this without your generous support.
