This team is in loving memory of my mom, Marie Paschall Andrews. She was diagnosed with PC in Nov 2019 and left us February 2021. Pancreatic cancer is notoriously hard to detect and treat. It is currently the third leading cause of cancer death and is predicted the be the second leading cause by 2030. Most cases are not found until the cancer has spread to other organ systems, making the 5-year survival rate for most patients about 3%. Patients diagnosed with stage IV (between 80-87% of all PC diagnoses) will live about a year. 

When my mom was diagnosed, as a nurse, I knew the realities of this disease. Treatment options, researching clinical trials, managing symptoms of the disease and the chemo were exhausting. I felt like I was running a race to find a miracle; I didn't want mom to die because I wasn't up on the latest research. We were fortunate that I am a nurse, and we have access to world class care at Duke. However, that isn't the case for many patients. Pan Can offers crucial support to newly diagnosed patients and caregivers. They also fund research, which is so important to finding better treatments, and more importantly effective screening tools.
