As many of you know Richard Sullivan, our dad, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September of 2018. As is often the case, his disease was widespread at the time of diagnosis. Unless caught in a very early stage, there is no cure for pancreatic cancer and all care is essentially palliative.

Despite this dire news and a tough treatment course which entailed several rounds of chemotherapy, recurrent infections and emergency room visits, our dad remained optimistic, stoic and engaged with loved ones throughout his entire last year. He finally passed on October 27, 2019 at age 73.

Jack, Nora and I wanted to give our family and his friends, former colleagues and students an opportunity to commemorate our father in a positive, productive way.

We have chosen the Pan Can Purple Stride 5k on Saturday, April 29 in NYC, Seaport District, Pier 17.

Our dad was an exercise and sports enthusiast throughout his life. In his youth , he competed in football and wrestling and in later adulthood he participated in running events such as the Cow Harbor 10k and hiked regularly in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Cascade Range in Washington State.

I know he would love to see us all out there pounding the pavement to improve the fate of current and future pancreatic cancer patients!
