We are taking steps to end pancreatic cancer at PanCAN PurpleStride on Saturday, April 27, 2024, in memory of our beautiful mother/mother-in-law/grandmother Patty and for all of our friends and loved ones who have been touched by pancreatic cancer.

In July 2000, our vivacious Patty sadly lost her short battle with pancreatic cancer. Like most, she found out too late for a fair fight!  About 95% of people with pancreatic cancer die from it, experts say. It’s so lethal because during the early stages, when the tumor would be most treatable, there are usually no symptoms. It tends to be discovered at advanced stages when abdominal pain or jaundice may result. 

Presently, there are no general screening tools for pancreatic masses/tumors/cysts. As in Katherine’s case, many people who learn about their pancreatic tumors early do so by accident during other incidental studies.  In 2017, a small mass was discovered on her pancreas during a work-up for Celiac Disease. Through imaging and biopsies it was determined to be an IPMN, a pre-cancerous neoplasm, and has been watched closely ever since. We heavily rely on the research and guidance of medical professionals to manage this situation, which can be very scary at times.  

This year, an estimated 56,770 new cases of pancreatic cancer will be diagnosed and an estimated 45,750 deaths from pancreatic cancer will occur across the nation.
