April 23 will mark 2 years since pancreatic cancer took my Dad. Seeing what that disease did to him motivates me to do anything I can to help raise awareness. Here are some facts about pancreatic cancer:
About 66,440 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
About 51,750 Americans will die of pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all major cancers. It is currently the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States after lung and colon.
Symptoms for pancreatic cancer may include weight loss, abdominal discomfort, back pain, development of type 2 diabetes and some tumors may cause jaundice leading to earlier diagnosis.
Surgical removal of the tumor is possible in less than 20% of patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer because detection is often in late stages and has spread beyond the pancreas.
Over the past decade, the 5 year survival rate has gone from 7% to 13%.
Knowing all these facts, we know how blessed we were to have my dad with us for almost 2 years after diagnosis, and we owe it all to Pepto Bismal (IYKYK)!
On Saturday, April 27, PanCAN’s PurpleStride event will be taking place at nearly 60 locations across the nation to honor everyone affected by the disease. It’s an inspirational day to celebrate survivors, and honor those we’ve lost.
When my Dad was first diagnosed, Josh helped my dad and me do a lot of research and found PanCAN, which was an incredible resource for us. I’m super motivated for this event to help them raise money to fund vital research that can bring new treatment options to patients, free, personalized, one-to-one support through PanCAN Patient Services; and more.
We’ve set an ambitious fundraising goal – because the more money we raise, the bigger impact we make – and would be extremely grateful for any size donation to help patients and families facing a pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
