I am Lily Lopez, and this is my why. I lost my mom to pancreatic cancer. Her death happened just a few weeks after her 38th birthday. I was just 9 years old at the time. Back in 2010 when it happened, the 5 year survival rate for this disease was a mere 8%. Our family did not have any awareness of this cancer. By the time we found out what my mom had, it was too late. She had stage 4 pancreatic cancer and passed away within months of the diagnosis. She fought hard to overcome it through chemo and radiation. But the cancer was too advanced to stop, and she arrived at the gates of Heaven on August 5, 2010. Her loss left our family forever changed. She was a light in this world and is missed deeply by all of those who had their lives touched by her in some way. I support the cause of PanCAN because too many lives have been taken by this disease. Too many mothers, too many fathers, too many grandparents, children, and friends.

It’s been 14 years since 2010, and cancer research has come so far. It wouldn’t be possible without organizations like PanCAN whose mission is to raise awareness, fund research, be of assistance to individuals undergoing treatment, and provide continued support to those in remission. Because of the research done in the last 14 years, the survival rate for pancreatic cancer has been on an upward trend for the last 3 years. We are now at a 5-year 13% survival rate. The goal of this foundation is to have a 5 year survival rate of 20% by 2030.

In this 5k we will be taking steps to end pancreatic cancer for good. This is a way to show all families and friends affected by pancreatic cancer that we are fighting for them. And that we remember those who have passed away from this disease.
