Believe it or not, it’s been a year since you generously supported my PanCAN team, Lavender Haze, and two years since I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. And with your generosity Lavender Haze was among the top 10 fundraising teams and one of the highest teams to accomplish that without receiving corporate or institutional funding.
What a year it’s been! I feel fantastic and there’s no recurrence in my pancreas or liver, which puts me among 1 to 5% of Stage IV pancreatic cancer patients.
Three hours after last year’s PanCAN walk I was headed to Europe where I got to travel with Steve, Jaymie and Darren together and individually, and I walked 296 miles, an average of 7+ miles a day. In the fall Steve and I renewed our vows in Las Vegas - after 30 years! - with the family, took a beautiful “second honeymoon” in Maui, went to my 45th reunion at Stanford, and I’m still traveling whenever I get a chance.
None of this would have been possible without PanCAN, which has been instrumental in fighting pancreatic cancer through research, patient support, and advocacy. PanCAN funds its own research grants, and it also brings to life revolutionary clinical projects, among which is a current trial for a KRAS Inhibitor, which could be a game changer in the fight against PC. Though there is no evidence of cancer in my pancreas or liver, I’m hoping to participate in this trial in the next few months to treat some very tiny and slow growing nodules in my lung. If so, I will be a direct beneficiary of PanCAN. However, recently the federal government has slashed 57% of the funding to pancreatic cancer research, which could be catastrophic to people like me!
