In March 2018, we lost our beloved mother,  Shirley A. Jackson "Shabela" to pancreatic cancer. After months of complaining about stomach discomfort, frustratingly going to and from the doctor without any clear diagnosis, she was eventually diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in the summer of 2017. This diagnosis was heartbreaking and surreal. Despite the low life expectancy of pancreatic cancer, she wanted to fight for her life and agreed to try a series of chemo treatments. These treatments consisted of taking weekly trips to and from the cancer center while doing her best to remain optimistic. Even though she physically didn't feel well and didn't have much energy, she managed to keep her great sense of humor, love of singing and faith. Even though the treatments weren't successful, she never gave up. We can hold her courage and love of life in our hearts and help strengthen others impacted by this life altering disease. Raises awareness about pancreatic cancer is important because we need to increase the 5 year survival rate which is currently only a staggering 13%. Although pancreatic cancer is the 10th most diagnosed cancer, it's the third most deadly in America. 

Team Shabela wants to make the biggest impact on the lives of pancreatic cancer patients – and we need you to do it!

We’re taking steps at the ultimate walk to end pancreatic cancer, PanCAN PurpleStride, on Saturday, April 26, 2025.

PurpleStride participants raise money to fund vital research that can bring new treatment options to patients; free, personalized, one-to-one support through PanCAN Patient Services; and more.
