Welcome to Our PanCAN PurpleStride Team Fundraising Page!
We are raising money in honor of my dad, Mahmoud "Moe" ElBassiouny, who passed away from pancreatic cancer on October 21, 2024. He was only 69 years old.
My dad was first diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in May 2023. He was incredibly healthy and his diagnose was a very big shock to us all. My dad started chemotherapy and a trial in July 2023 and was having amazing results. His cancer was consistently shrinking, he was tolerating the side effects of chemo amazingly, and we were all so hopeful because of how great things were going.
My dad's oncologist was very encouraged by his results and because my dad was doing so well, he encouraged my dad to go visit family in Egypt. My dad and I had planned a trip to go to Egypt on June 7, 2024, but he suffered a severe brain aneurysm on June 1. He had to have 2 brain surgeries, had a very long hospital stay, intensive rehab, and numerous medical complications. My dad was unable to resume chemo after that because of how debilitating the brain aneurysm was. We waited for months hoping he would be able to resume chemo, but he was never able to because of how difficult the recovery was from the aneurysm. During this time, his cancer had spread very quickly. He eventually started hospice care at home and passed on October 21, 2024.
My dad was a fighter and never gave up. He handled his diagnosis and treatment with nothing but grace, persistence, and grit. He fought until the end and I truly thought that if anyone can beat pancreatic cancer, it would have been my dad. One Moe time will be walking in honor of my dad.
