In March of this year my mother died from pancreatic cancer. What you need to know about my mother is that she beamed with joy and kindness. It was impossible to not feel her love and warmth when she was with you. She even had the ability to find comfort and humor through her treatments and would joke about how smooth her entire body was including the loss of her nose hairs.
I'm still sorting through and processing life without my mom. Recently, a strong sense of calling in how to honor my mom surfaced in my mind and heart.
She was never able to attend an event in person, but my mom was one of my biggest champions in supporting my passion for ultra running. She tracked my progress in every ultra I ran. She thought I was nuts, yet always cheered me on the entire way and told stories as if I had won.
I'm going to honor my mother by running in her name in a fundraising event - with an ultra running twist. I'm going to run the furthest I've ever run using the basis of a format commonly known as a "backyard ultra". Runners start a 4.167 mile loop every hour, on the hour, until only one runner remains. However, I'll be the only runner in this event and I'll continue running so long as I can complete each loop within the timeframe of an hour.
My goal is to see how far I can run with my mom along side of me.
All are welcome to swing by and run some slow, steady miles with me. If you want to get into the spirit and provide me with some extra motivation, then come out wearing your loudest purple!
I'll be kicking things off at Harper Lake on November 4th @ 8:00am. My loop consists of connecting the perimeter of Davidson Mesa with Harper Lake (total = 4.2mi). The run will go through November 5th. You can also check on my progress by finding me on Strava (https://www.strava.com/athletes/9833325).
(*Dogs are not allowed at Harper Lake.)
