Thank You for Prioritizing Medical Research
Dear [Decision Maker],
As your constituent and someone who has been impacted by the world's toughest cancer, I care deeply about the future of pancreatic cancer patients and recognize the critical role the federal government serves in funding lifesaving research.I have hope because Congress passed the combined Defense-LHHS 2019 funding package, which includes a $2 billion increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and provides $6.1 billion for the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
Thank you for recognizing the importance of increasing medical research funding at the NIH and the NCI. I appreciate the effort of you and your colleagues to once again work in a bipartisan manner to prioritize medical research funding.Cancer research does not work on a fiscal calendar. Your efforts in approving funding before the end of the current fiscal year empowers greater research leading to better treatment options and longer lives for pancreatic cancer patients.
Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States and the only major cancer with a survival rate in the single digits, at just 9 percent. There is currently no early detection strategy and no treatment options that offer a cure. These facts are why this crucial step by Congress in the fight against pancreatic cancer is so necessary. The funding that will be available because of this bipartisan achievement supports research to advance pancreatic cancer discoveries and improve outcomes for patients.
