SPECIAL GUEST

Sudarshan "Sudsie" Maharaj
(Sud-DARE-shun MAH-ha-raj)
Survivor Speaker

In May 2023, Sudarshan \"Sudsie\" Maharaj, the Anaheim Ducks beloved, long-time and well-respected goaltending coach was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at 59 years old.

Maharaj had first thought he was dealing with an ulcer before receiving the shocking diagnosis. He was given a very low chance of survival and faced long odds undergoing major surgery removing his entire gallbladder, parts of his small intestines, pancreas and stomach, 11 rounds of chemo and numerous other challenges throughout his courageous fight. After being bedridden and losing over 60 pounds, Sudsie began to prepare for the worst as he asked Ducks goaltender and longtime friend John Gibson to serve as his pall bearer if that day were to come.

Sudsie has inspired many on his journey, attacking the terrible disease with courage and honor. We are so proud to give the encouraging update that Sudsie is on the road to recovery and returned to work for the Anaheim Ducks during the second half of the 2023-24 season.

Sudsie has been a member of the Anaheim Ducks family for over 10 years, first serving as a goaltending consultant with the Norfolk Admirals (2013-14), which was then the Ducks’ AHL affiliate. Maharaj was named the Ducks’ goaltending coach, starting in the 2016-17 season.

Previously, he spent eight seasons in the New York Islanders’ organization, starting in 2003-04. When Maharaj joined the Islanders, he became the first goaltending coach of Indian descent to work in the NHL on a full-time basis. He was born in Trinidad and moved to Toronto at 6.

Sudarshan and his wife, Yvonne, have two daughters, Alexandra and Katherine.
